About Tenerife
History
Tenerife is one of the
largest and most popular Canary Islands. Its
beautiful tropical climate is due to the islands
location being off the North West cost of
Africa. The glorious climate is all year round
and the scenery contrasts beautifully between
the north and the south of the island and in
particular the lush valley of Orotava. The
awesome presence of Mount Teide constantly
reminds you of Tenerife's volcanic heritage.
Access to the now extinct volcano is either by
foot or by cable car that will carry you almost
to the very summit. From the peak, on a clear
day, you are in heaven and have breathtaking
views of Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and
El Hierro. Teide is the Canary Islands most
visited tourist attraction and must not be
missed.
Economy
Most of Tenerife's economy is
dominated by tourism. This is due to some of
the world’s best, all year round weather, being
only approximately a 4 hour flight from the UK.
The economy’s other industries also include
Banana & other agricultural exports. Most
things are far cheaper in Tenerife, especially
cigarettes and alcohol. Do not buy your duty
free at the airport or on the plane as they are
much, much cheaper on the island.
Culture
Main visitors to Tenerife
are from Spain, the UK, Germany & Italy. The
annual Mardi Gras Carnival at Santa Cruz is
apparently the second largest in the world.
This spectacular event, held in February,
involves all the people of Tenerife and is a
must if you are visiting during this month.
Festivals are regular and common and the
lifestyle is very much outdoors due to the warm
weather, however there is still a high cultural
presence in the way of Museums, Arts and
Galleries etc.
Political & Authorities
Although a Spanish
possession, Tenerife has its own Government and
special status within the EU. The Spanish
monarchy is represented by King Carlos and Queen
Sofia. Tenerife's police services comprise 3 main groups, Policia Local, Guardia Civil & Policia National.
